The ACGT was founded in 1996. Current membership is given as 868, with representatives from 21 countries (though only 20 are listed): Bahrain , Djibouti, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, UAE and Yemen.
The objectives are summarised differently depending on the source. One version includes:
- strengthening scientific and professional relations among ACGT members
- promoting public awareness of the needs of G&T children
- establishing a network for the exchange of ideas related to training teachers of gifted students, among individuals and institutions in the Arab world
- conducting research studies regarding major issues in the field of gifted education
- developing a database and providing technical consultations which will strengthen relations between individuals and institutions
- promoting contacts with similar institutions working with G&T children all over the world to communicate information about existing programs for the gifted.
The President-elect of the Council is Dr Fathi Al Jerwan of the Amman Arab University for Graduate Studies, Jordan. The main office holders are Jordanian and the Council’s offices are also in Jordan.
The website (in Arabic) is fairly comprehensive and up-to-date. It includes an online forum (though not well-used). It provides access to an online newsletter and also refers to a Journal of Talent and Creativity (though there is nothing behind the link).
The Council supports a series of conferences, the first of which took place in 1998 in the UAE. Subsequent events have alternated between Jordan (2000, 2005, 2009) and Oman (2003, 2007).
The 7th Conference will be held in Jordan in July 2010. The Council website mentions several other past and future conferences, including an international event in Abu Dhabi in October 2010.
The overall impression is that G&T education is thriving in many parts of the Arab world.
